Verse of the Day

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.” [Psalm 95:1-2 – NKJV]

Somehow over the years we’ve gotten away from the real meaning of Thanksgiving. Truth be told, I think this is true of almost every holiday. All too often we are too focused on “the commercial” as Alfred put it so aptly in “Miracle on 34th Street.” Yes, the almighty dollar is the name of the game nowadays.

What does Thanksgiving really mean to most folks? A long drive to visit relatives that you saw about a year ago; struggling with a covered dish as you step gingerly along the ice-covered sidewalk on the way to the front door; laughing at Uncle Bob’s jokes; trying not to eat too much turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and dessert; and watching more football than you’ve seen in months.

Is this really all there is to it? Not according to the Psalmist! Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed on us. It about praising Him; shouting joyfully to Him for the gift of His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! In short, it’s all about God!
